# Running Tasks 56-59: Visual Regression Testing & Validation
This guide provides step-by-step instructions for executing Tasks 56-59 of the Angular→React migration.
## Prerequisites
### Verify Tasks 1-55 Completion
Before starting Tasks 56-59, ensure:
- [ ] React components mirror Angular functionality
- [ ] All data-testid attributes present in both apps
- [ ] Cypress test suite created (1,225+ tests)
- [ ] BackstopJS configs ready (`backstop-angular.json`, `backstop-react.json`)
- [ ] Git repository clean (no uncommitted changes)
### Environment Setup
```bash
# From project root
npm install
# E2E dependencies
cd e2e
npm install
cd ..
# React app
cd apps/react
npm install
cd ../..
# Angular app
cd apps/angular
npm install
cd ../..
```
### Verify Port Availability
- Port 3000: Angular development server (Task 56)
- Port 3001: React development server (Tasks 57-59)
```bash
# Check if ports are available
lsof -i :3000 || echo "Port 3000 is free"
lsof -i :3001 || echo "Port 3001 is free"
# If ports are in use, kill existing processes:
# lsof -ti:3000 | xargs kill -9
# lsof -ti:3001 | xargs kill -9
```
---
## Task 56: Generate BackstopJS Baseline from Angular
### Objective
Create the Angular baseline images as the immutable reference for visual regression testing.
### Step 1: Start Angular Development Server
```bash
# From project root
cd apps/angular
# Start the development server on port 3000
npm start
# Wait for build to complete (usually 15-20 seconds)
# You should see: "✓ Compiled successfully in XXXms"
```
**Expected Output:**
```
✓ Compiled successfully.
⠿ Watching for file changes...
**NOTE** To open the application, execute the following command in your browser:
http://localhost:3000/
⠿ Merging 50 translation files... Done
```
### Step 2: Verify Angular Server is Running
In a new terminal:
```bash
# Test Angular server
curl -s http://localhost:3000 | head -20
# Should return HTML content
# Or open in browser
open http://localhost:3000
```
### Step 3: Run BackstopJS Reference Capture
```bash
# From project root
cd e2e
# Run the reference capture command
# This captures baseline images from Angular on localhost:3000
npm run backstop:reference
# Or explicitly:
# npx backstop reference --config=backstop/backstop-angular.json
```
**What Happens:**
1. BackstopJS reads `backstop-angular.json`
2. Launches Puppeteer browser instance
3. Navigates to each scenario URL (localhost:3000)
4. Waits for ready selectors (e.g., `[data-testid="page-loaded"]`)
5. Takes screenshots at each viewport size
6. Saves images to `backstop/bitmaps_reference/`
**Expected Duration:** 1-3 minutes depending on system performance
### Step 4: Verify Baseline Images Created
```bash
# From e2e directory
ls -la backstop/bitmaps_reference/ | wc -l
# Should show 20+ files
# Each scenario captures in each viewport:
# - Start Page (desktop, tablet, mobile) = 3 images
# - Online Board - Arrivals (desktop, tablet, mobile) = 3 images
# - Schedule Page (desktop, tablet, mobile) = 3 images
# - Flights Map (desktop, tablet, mobile) = 3 images
# Total: 12 images + metadata = ~15-20 files
```
**Example Output:**
```
-rw-r--r-- Start Page_desktop_1440x900.png
-rw-r--r-- Start Page_tablet_768x1024.png
-rw-r--r-- Start Page_mobile_375x667.png
-rw-r--r-- Online Board - Arrivals_desktop_1440x900.png
-rw-r--r-- Online Board - Arrivals_tablet_768x1024.png
-rw-r--r-- Online Board - Arrivals_mobile_375x667.png
-rw-r--r-- Schedule Page_desktop_1440x900.png
-rw-r--r-- Schedule Page_tablet_768x1024.png
-rw-r--r-- Schedule Page_mobile_375x667.png
-rw-r--r-- Flights Map_desktop_1440x900.png
-rw-r--r-- Flights Map_tablet_768x1024.png
-rw-r--r-- Flights Map_mobile_375x667.png
```
### Step 5: Verify Image Quality
```bash
# Check image file sizes (should be reasonable)
du -sh backstop/bitmaps_reference/*
# Example: Each image should be 50KB-500KB depending on content
```
### Step 6: Commit Baseline Images
```bash
# From project root
git add e2e/backstop/bitmaps_reference/
git commit -m "test: generate BackstopJS baseline from Angular version
- Capture Start Page (3 viewports)
- Capture Online Board - Arrivals (3 viewports)
- Capture Schedule Page (3 viewports)
- Capture Flights Map (3 viewports)
- Total: 12 baseline reference images
- Angular version serves as immutable reference"
```
### Task 56 Checklist
- [ ] Angular server running on localhost:3000

**Status:** ✅ Task 56 Complete
---
## Task 57: Run BackstopJS Comparison on React
### Objective
Compare React implementation against the Angular baseline to identify visual differences.
### Step 1: Keep Angular Server Running
Continue from Task 56 - Angular server should still be running on localhost:3000.
### Step 2: Start React Development Server
In a new terminal:
```bash
# From project root
cd apps/react
# Start React development server on port 3001
npm run dev
# Wait for build to complete (usually 10-15 seconds)
```
**Expected Output:**
```
VITE v5.0.0 ready in XXX ms
➜ Local: http://localhost:3001/
```
### Step 3: Verify React Server is Running
```bash
# Test React server
curl -s http://localhost:3001 | head -20
# Or open in browser
open http://localhost:3001
```
### Step 4: Run BackstopJS Test Comparison
```bash
# From project root
cd e2e
# Run the test comparison command
# This compares React (localhost:3001) against Angular baseline
npm run backstop:test
# Or explicitly:
# npx backstop test --config=backstop/backstop-react.json
```
**What Happens:**
1. BackstopJS reads `backstop-react.json`
2. Launches Puppeteer browser instance
3. Navigates to each scenario URL (localhost:3001)
4. Captures screenshots at each viewport size
5. Compares against baseline images from Task 56
6. Generates diff images showing pixel differences
7. Produces HTML report at `backstop/html_report_react/index.html`
**Expected Duration:** 2-4 minutes
### Step 5: Review the Visual Diff Report
```bash
# Open the HTML report in your browser
open backstop/html_report_react/index.html
# Or view from command line (if available)
cat backstop/html_report_react/index.html
```
**Report Structure:**
```
├── Overview (pass/fail summary)
├── For each scenario:
│ ├── Screenshot comparison
│ ├── Diff highlight (showing changed pixels)
│ ├── Pixel difference percentage
│ ├── Pass/fail status
│ └── Detailed metrics
└── Summary statistics
```
### Step 6: Analyze Differences
For each scenario in the report:
**PASS Scenarios (0% difference):**
- No action needed
- React implementation matches Angular perfectly
**FAIL Scenarios (> 0% difference):**
1. Note the scenario name
2. Note the difference percentage
3. Examine the diff image to identify what changed
4. Categorize the difference:
- **Spacing/Padding** - CSS margin/padding mismatch
- **Colors** - Hex/RGBA value difference
- **Typography** - Font family, weight, or size difference
- **Borders/Shadows** - Border or box-shadow styling
- **Component Size** - Width/height mismatch
- **Layout** - Flex/grid alignment issue
- **State** - Button hover/focus state captured
- **Content** - Dynamic content timing issue
### Step 7: Document Findings
Create a summary of visual differences:
```bash
# Create a differences log
cat > e2e/VISUAL_DIFF_LOG.txt << 'EOF'
# BackstopJS Visual Comparison Results - Task 57
## Date
$(date)
## Summary
- Total Scenarios: 12
- Passed: X
- Failed: Y
- Average Difference: Z%
## Failed Scenarios
1. Scenario Name
## Recommended Fixes (Task 58)
- [Action 1]
- [Action 2]
EOF
```
### Step 8: Commit Test Results
```bash
# From project root
git add e2e/backstop/bitmaps_test_react/
git add e2e/backstop/html_report_react/
git add e2e/VISUAL_DIFF_LOG.txt # If created
git commit -m "test: run BackstopJS comparison - React vs Angular baseline
- Compare React implementation (localhost:3001) against Angular baseline
- Capture 12 test scenarios (4 pages × 3 viewports)
- Generate visual diff report
- Document pixel differences and comparison results
- See html_report_react/index.html for detailed analysis"
```
### Task 57 Checklist

**Status:** ✅ Task 57 Complete
---
## Task 58: Fix Visual Differences (Iterative)
### Objective
Update React CSS to match Angular styling and achieve 0% visual difference.
**Note:** This is an iterative process. Repeat the fix cycle for each failing scenario.
### Process Overview
For each failed scenario from Task 57:
1. **Identify** the component and CSS affected
2. **Compare** Angular vs React styles
3. **Update** React SCSS to match
4. **Test** the specific scenario
5. **Verify** the difference is resolved
### Example Workflow: "Online Board - Arrivals" Scenario
**Scenario:** Online Board shows 2.5% difference (too much spacing)
#### Step 1: Identify the Component
From the visual diff report, the "Online Board - Arrivals" page shows extra spacing.
```bash
# Identify which React component renders this page
grep -r "Online Board\|board" apps/react/src/app/pages/*.tsx
# Found: apps/react/src/app/pages/OnlineBoard.tsx
```
#### Step 2: Examine the Component
```bash
# View the React component
cat apps/react/src/app/pages/OnlineBoard.tsx
# View the Angular equivalent
cat apps/angular/src/app/pages/online-board/online-board.component.ts
```
#### Step 3: Compare Styling
```bash
# Find associated SCSS files
find apps/react/src -name "*board*.scss" -o -name "*online*.scss"
find apps/angular/src -name "*board*.scss" -o -name "*online*.scss"
# Example locations:
# React: apps/react/src/styles/pages/board/online-board.scss
# Angular: apps/angular/src/styles/pages/board/online-board.scss
```
#### Step 4: Update React SCSS
```bash
# Open React SCSS file and compare with Angular version
cat apps/react/src/styles/pages/board/online-board.scss
cat apps/angular/src/styles/pages/board/online-board.scss
# Update spacing, margins, padding, etc. to match Angular
```
**Example Changes:**
```scss
// Before (React)
.online-board-container {
padding: 20px;
margin-bottom: 20px;
}
// After (matches Angular)
.online-board-container {
padding: 16px;
margin-bottom: 16px;
}
```
#### Step 5: Rebuild React App
The development server auto-rebuilds on save, but verify:
```bash
# Check React server logs for rebuild confirmation
# Should see: "✓ XXX modules transformed in XXXms"
```
#### Step 6: Test the Specific Scenario
```bash
# From e2e directory
# Re-run just the failing scenario to verify the fix
npx backstop test --config=backstop/backstop-react.json --filter="Online Board - Arrivals"
# Review the report - difference should be 0%
open backstop/html_report_react/index.html
```
#### Step 7: Commit the Fix
```bash
git add apps/react/src/styles/pages/board/online-board.scss
git commit -m "fix: resolve Online Board spacing differences
- Adjust padding from 20px to 16px to match Angular baseline
- Update margin-bottom from 20px to 16px
- Pixel difference reduced from 2.5% to 0%"
```
### General Fix Categories
#### 1. Spacing/Padding Differences
```bash
# Files to update
apps/react/src/styles/pages/
apps/react/src/styles/components/
# What to look for
- margin: X
- padding: X
- gap: X
- line-height: X
```
#### 2. Color Differences
```bash
# Check for color values
grep -r "color:" apps/react/src/styles/
# Compare hex values with Angular
# #fff vs #ffffff (normalize)
# RGB vs hex (convert)
```
#### 3. Typography Differences
```bash
# Check font settings
grep -r "font-" apps/react/src/styles/
# Compare
- font-family
- font-size
- font-weight
- letter-spacing
- text-transform
```
#### 4. Border/Shadow Differences
```bash
# Check border and shadow styles
grep -r "border\|box-shadow" apps/react/src/styles/
# Common issues:
- border: 1px vs border: 2px
- box-shadow variations
- border-radius differences
```
#### 5. Component Size Differences
```bash
# Check width/height
grep -r "width:\|height:\|min-\|max-" apps/react/src/styles/
# Verify dimensions match between Angular and React
```
#### 6. Layout/Alignment Issues
```bash
# Check flexbox/grid settings
grep -r "display:\|flex\|grid\|align\|justify" apps/react/src/styles/
# Common issues:
- flex-direction
- justify-content
- align-items
- gap/column-gap/row-gap
```
### Iterative Testing
```bash
# Full test cycle for one scenario
1. Make CSS change
2. Save file (auto-rebuilds)
3. Wait for rebuild
4. Run test for that scenario only
5. Review report
6. If 0%: commit and move to next
7. If not 0%: adjust and repeat from step 1
```
### Multiple Failing Scenarios
```bash
# If multiple scenarios fail, prioritize:
# 1. Fix scenarios with largest differences first
# 2. Fix scenarios that share common CSS (e.g., same component)
# 3. Test frequently to catch cascading issues
# Useful command to see all failures
npx backstop test --config=backstop/backstop-react.json 2>&1 | grep -i "fail\|difference"
```
### Task 58 Checklist
- [ ] Reviewed all failing scenarios from Task 57
- [ ] Identified affected React components
- [ ] Compared Angular vs React styles
- [ ] Updated React SCSS for each difference
- [ ] Tested each fix individually
- [ ] Achieved 0% difference for all scenarios
- [ ] Committed all CSS fixes with clear messages
**Status:** ✅ Task 58 Complete (when all visual differences resolved)
---
## Task 59: Run Full Validation Suite
### Objective
Execute comprehensive validation to confirm complete Angular→React parity.
### Step 1: Ensure Both Servers Are Running
```bash
# Terminal 1: Angular on port 3000
cd apps/angular
npm start
# Terminal 2: React on port 3001
cd apps/react
npm run dev
npm run cypress:run
# Or open interactive test runner
npm run cypress:open
```
**Expected Output:**
```
```
**What Happens:**
1. Cypress launches browser
2. Runs all test files in `cypress/integration/`
3. Tests functional parity:
- Search functionality
- Navigation workflows
- Component interactions
- Responsive design
- Accessibility
- Error handling
- Internationalization
- Performance
4. Generates test report and screenshots
**Expected Duration:** 10-20 minutes for 1,225+ tests
### Step 3: Review Cypress Results
```bash
# Check test results summary
cat cypress/videos/ # Video recordings (if enabled)
ls cypress/screenshots/ # Failure screenshots
# Interpretation:
# - All passing: Great! Move to Step 4
# - Some failing: Debug failures before proceeding
# - Script failure: Check app servers are running
```
**If Tests Fail:**
1. Identify the failing test
2. Check browser console for errors
3. Verify React component data-testid attributes
4. Fix the component or test
5. Re-run tests
### Step 4: Run Final BackstopJS Visual Validation
```bash
# From e2e directory
# Run the final visual regression test
npm run backstop:test
# This should now pass with 0% differences if Task 58 was completed
```
**Expected Results:**
```
```
### Step 6: Generate Validation Report

## Troubleshooting
### Port Already in Use
```bash
# Find and kill process on port 3000
lsof -ti:3000 | xargs kill -9
# Find and kill process on port 3001
lsof -ti:3001 | xargs kill -9
```
### BackstopJS Failures
```bash
# Debug BackstopJS with verbose output
npx backstop test --config=backstop/backstop-react.json --debug
# Check engine scripts for errors
cat backstop/engine_scripts/puppet/runBefore.js
cat backstop/engine_scripts/puppet/runAfter.js
# Verify ready selectors exist in app
grep -r "data-testid=\"page-loaded\"" apps/react/
```
### Cypress Timeouts
```bash
# Increase timeout in cypress.config.ts
defaultCommandTimeout: 15000 # was 10000
# Re-run tests
npm run cypress:run
```
### Visual Differences Not Resolving
```bash
# Manually verify selector exists
curl http://localhost:3001 | grep "data-testid=\"page-loaded\""
# Check for CSS conflicts
grep -r "!important" apps/react/src/styles/
# Verify no CSS reset differences
cat apps/react/src/styles/globals/reset.scss
cat apps/angular/src/styles/globals/reset.scss
```
### Slow Test Execution
```bash
# Run tests in parallel (increase asyncCaptureLimit)
# Modify backstop-react.json:
# "asyncCaptureLimit": 10, # was 5
# "asyncCompareLimit": 100, # was 50
```
---
